Plastic waste is still a serious problem for Indonesia and other countries in the world. And plastic can be one of the pollution and threats to the ecosystem in the sea. In Indonesia, plastic waste is not only found in land areas, but also has spread to the sea area which covers 2/3 of the total area of Indonesia. All parties are encouraged to continue to be involved in handling plastic waste in the ocean.

Does the plastic waste have an impact on the ocean? Yes, As a result of the amount of waste that is the first victim is the ecosystem in the ocean. Many marine biota feel the direct impact of the amount of plastic waste in the ocean, from the water that gets dirty to the poison from the plastic. If this is allowed, we indirectly 'kill' the ecosystem because of some of the above impacts. In addition to marine ecosystems, humans living on the coastline will also feel the effects of this plastic waste pollution. For some people who have a dependence on life for the sea, it will obviously be greatly harmed by this plastic pollution. Every year at least as many as 1.29 million tons of waste is dumped into rivers and empties into the ocean. Of these, as many as 13,000 plastics float on every square kilometer each year. This fact makes Indonesia the second largest country in the world with the highest production of plastic waste in the ocean. At the world level, plastic granules in the sea will reach 250 million tons by 2025, the world government is starting to think about how to deal with this important problem. There are 40 percent of global plastic production is disposable plastic, which is not sustainable. This is equivalent to around 128 million tons. Most of these plastics have a low recycling rate, and are not biologically decomposed in a reasonable time span. It took thousands of years for polyproplents to completely decompose. Even worse, when plastic reaches the sea, the movement of the ocean along with sunlight can destroy the plastic into small particles called "microplastic". Plastic waste in the Indonesian sea at this time has caused a lot of losses. Even the losses have reached USD1.2 billion. And also caused losses in the fields of fisheries, shipping, tourism and the insurance business. With such huge losses coming from various fields, plastic waste if left unchecked can have a worse impact on the community. The intended impact is unemployment and it can trigger an increase in poverty in the community.

Beginning in December 2017, the United Nations Environment Agency (UN) in Nairobi, Kenya, declared a resolution on plastic and microplastic waste at sea. In essence, countries agreed to prevent and reduce marine pollution significantly by 2025. The state prioritizes policies that avoid plastic and microplastic waste entering the marine environment. As a follow-up, an international working group was formed to examine options for handling garbage in the sea that is binding law. The move received wide acceptance because the crisis of plastic waste in the sea became a new enemy whose impact was increasingly evident. The main objective of this international working group is to find ways to eliminate marine waste in the long run. Equally important is to embrace the community to carry out the 6R campaign namely redesign (reduce), reduce (reduce plastic as a raw material), remove (remove disposable plastic), reuse (reuse plastic that can still be used), recycle (recycle to avoid plastic waste), recover (strict plastic combustion for energy production).

For that, as human beings who care about the sustainability of the marine area, it is appropriate for us to take care of the oceans from the dangers of plastic waste pollution. Even though we are not people who directly have dependence on the sea, at least we will take care of the sea by spreading important information about the dangers of plastic waste to the marine ecosystem. In this way we can help the survival of other living beings who are very dependent on the sea. And people should have an awareness that the sea is a strategic food source. Plastic waste has an impact on living things. Humans who make the sea polluted and humans have all the causes and consequences. So as human beings we must maintain the balance of the ecosystem and make good use of natural resources by not disposing of plastic waste in the sea..
